Week 7

This week was a nice, low-key week for August and me. For the first time in his short life, we had a fairly light agenda...No appointments were arranged, no visitors were scheduled, no big to-do's on our list. So we sat around and stared at each other when he wasn't napping or eating, and of course we took a lot of pictures :)
By the time Friday rolled around we were ready to take advantage of the gorgeous weather, and partake in some socialization. So we enjoyed a nice lunch at Sweetish Hill with my old employer Alice, then we went to check the progress of our friend Cynthia's coffee shop, then August's 'Aunt Sarah' came to visit since Kevin and 'Uncle Josh' were camping for the evening.
A few more milestones have been reached this week. August started smirking and smiling a lot more when prompted, but of course never for the camera. Also, all of the hair on the top of his head has disappeared leaving an even funnier, middle-aged man appearance when combined with his wrinkly forehead.
Another big step this week was that we officially purchased a bigger sized diaper. Of course, that is being a bit wishful thinking on our part considering he has been fitting quite comfortably in the newborn swaddlers. I was just tired of having to buy a box a week since they don't make massive quantities in the miniature sizes. So when I was at one of the local, giant, wholesale clubs I said 'what the heck...we'll give these a try'. I purchased a huge box containing 252 size 1-2 diapers. With a little creative folding on our part, they fit him quite nicely :) Hopefully this week we will make the investment in the reusable diapers we have been discussing for several months, and weekly diaper purchases will be a thing of the past.

bye bye itty-bitty diapers

sxsw

We enjoyed an abbreviated sxsw music experience this year. All of our efforts were concentrated on the free day shows and parties along South Congress Ave. We enjoyed the Born Ruffians and Freelance Whales at Yard Dog, The Love Language, Japandroids, a Giant Dog, Jukebox the Ghost, and Phantagram at Music by the Slice at Homeslice Pizza, Imagine Dragon at Guero's, Everybody was in the French Resistance and Ben Sollee at the South by San Jose Party, and finally Octopus Project at Whole Foods. Of course August and his ginormous yet effective ear muff's were a hit with both young and old. We already can't wait to take him to more shows next year!

Happy St.Patrick's Day!

Week 6

This week has been the busiest week of August's short life thus far. To start the week, my two good friends Christian and Cindy came down to meet the little guy. I loved the company and especially the advice that both of the mother's of two had to offer. A couple of days later we celebrated St.Patrick's day (one of my personal favorites). Then August's Momo came to spend her spring break with us since Grandaddy was in Australia. Finally, Kevin took Thursday and Friday off from work so that we all could partake in the free music and parties around town for sxsw!

Kite Festival

You couldn't have picked prettier weather for this year's Zilker Park Kite Festival. We loaded up the baby and the dogs for a nice stroll around the perimeter of the park to view the spectacle. Though August chose to sleep through the whole event, he would tell you that it was quite an impressive site!

Weekend Plans

We are looking forward to a fun-filled, gorgeous, spring weekend here in Austin. Hopefully we will get to spend the majority of it outdoors! Sxsw interactive/film festival has begun, and the annual kite festival is out at Zilker Park this Sunday. We plan on visits from a few Dallas area friends and family early in the week, and then we will hit up the music portion of sxsw during the latter half of the week. I hope to post several pictures of August's first cultural outings around town. In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy the gorgeous weather where you are!

Pretty Blues

I'm not sure if it's because he is awake more, or if his eyes are changing with age...but I think they're getting lighter. What do you think?

A Growth Spurt has Arrived!

We were beginning to get used to our newborn-sized munchkin, but we can proudly declare that he has finally hit a growth spurt. At this week's appointment, he weighed in at 8lbs 7oz. That's a whopping 1/2 lb. gain in a week! Now we can get back on track with the once a month appointments, though I'll admit that it was kind of fun to see the progress week by week. :)

Along with his new found weight, August spends a lot more alert time throughout the day. It's fun to witness how quickly he changes and develops over the weeks. He can hold his head up pretty well, sucks on his hands a lot (still hasn't discovered his thumb), is a lot more verbal, and as of today is working on his social smiles.

Spring has Sprung

While I'm not the biggest fan of the trees that have taken over our living room since this winter's frosts, I do love the free room scent that has accompanied the blooming flowers on the Satsuma. These past few weekends have certainly spoiled us all, I can hardly wait to introduce August to the sights and smells of spring!
